HDR photography


Recently my brother demonstrated his Android phone camera. It does not have good flash but compensates by using HDR (high dynamic range) algorithm. It takes several pictures at different exposures (maybe different apertures too?) and somehow combines them into a picture almost as good as something with proper flash and good optics.

I did notice that the colours tend to saturate a little. There are also artistic photographers like Trey Ratcliff gaking full advantage of it. Some exaples of Trey’s HDR photos can be seen here:

I started wondering if the HDR algorithm can be used for multispectral images… I haven’t looked into it yet. I don’t even know the basics of HDR or how it works. I will do some reading about it…
