Madness. That’s all I can say about the MInistry of Education’s directive to shorten diploma courses. Seven weeks to teach fourteen week’s worth of material. It may be possible for some subjects, but not science! The other faculties refused to do it. So why is our faculty doing it? It’s down to a previous head of dept agreeing to do it.

Most of us protested at a meeting saying it’s impractical and defeats the goal of creating scientifically literate graduates. Not to mention the burden on lecturers and staff. Imagine teaching three hours straight and then off to the lab for another two hours every day? And there I saw for the first time the phenomenon of apple-polishing. There was one who actually agreed that the directive was practical
