Ghibli’s Boys on Bicycles

Just a post about Studio Ghibli and some of their young characters on bicycles.

First, Amasawa Seiji from Whisper of the Heart.

He’s got grit, for sure.

Tombo from Kiki’s Delivery Service

A modified bike driven by a propeller. Later he adds wings and it flies.

This one’s from Up on Poppy HIll. I haven’t seen it yet; it’s not on my Ghibli Collection DVD.

So, what is it about boys and bicycles in anime? Maybe it’s the idea of freedom and mobility needing effort and determination. You can’t go anywhere without pedaling. But just pedal and you can go anywhere, even in the air per Kiki’s Delivery Service.
